We talked with Ric Drasin in October, 2019.
👋 Hi! Tell us about yourself and your training
I’m Ric Drasin and I’m over 21. Actually I’m 75. From Venice Beach, California and living in Sherman Oaks, California.
My jobs are many. My show Ric’s Corner, hosting other shows, Afterbuzz TV, Ric Drasin Live! and the TV series Tuff and Tender.
Besides filming and editing my shows, I also have my own clothing line beginning with the Gold’s Gym logo which I designed. I have two lines, Big Boy Body Wear and Ric Drasin Collection as seen on Yeah I Workout.
I have 3 kids (all grown up) and 6 grandkids, so busy life.
For the past five years I’ve had carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands. It affects my grip in the gym and makes it difficult to type etc. Had handsurgery on one hand, but it didn’t work.
I’ve been training since I was 16. I just liked the results it gave me.
Besides bodybuilding, I have been doing pro wrestling. I did wrestling along with bodybuilding from 1965 to 2001. Had to retire after I tore both quads in 2001.
Besides sports, my hobbies are art work and the guitar.
I have sponsors on my show Ric’s Corner. They get business and I get paid. I have several sponsors who pay to be on my show on a monthly basis like Old School Labs.
⏱ Describe a typical day of training
My typical day is getting up having breakfast and then I’m going to the gym.
At the gym I’m picking a body part to work on, for example doing chest or just the shoulders one day and then the next day do back and then the next day I might do legs and arms. It all just depends on how I feel.
As far as cardio goes I just workout fast and then I do the bike for maybe 15 minutes.
Most days I train just 45 minutes. That’s plenty and I prefer to train alone. I don’t keep a training log. I just know what I’m doing.
As I mentioned earlier, my carpal tunnel syndrome affects my grip, but I work through it.
👊 How do you keep going and push harder?
I’m a very self-motivated person. I get up in the morning and I then I go. I don’t have setbacks. I don’t get depressed and I don’t hold myself back from doing anything.
My show Ric’s Corner is about motivating and getting the job done and I hope other people do the same. I’m good at multitasking.
🏆 How are you doing today and what does the future look like?
I would do nothing in my life different. I have already got to do pro wrestling, bodybuilding, art, music and I’ve achieved everything I’ve set out to do.
I don’t know about the future until it comes. I’m 75 so I don’t know what future is ahead of me yet.
🤕 How do you recover, rest and handle injuries?
I’ve had plenty of injuries from wrestling. Tore my quads, ripped my tricep, knee replacement, sore shoulders and whatever goes along with training injuries, but I keep going to the gym and I work through them and I don’t take pain pills.
I sleep about 6-7 hours a night which is plenty. I traveled plenty when I was on the road wrestling but I don’t anymore.
As far as supplements go I use Old School Labs. They have a big assortment of supps that work well.
🍎 How is your diet and what supplements do you use?
I try not to keep things complicated. I make them simple.
I follow the bodybuilding diet that has been used for years since the 1940s. Hi protein low carb and that’s basically it.
I don’t count calories and I don’t track protein or macros. I go to social events and I’ll snack on what looks decent. If it doesn’t look decent I won’t eat it.
I don’t really use cheat days anymore. I did 40 years ago, but now I just eat normal and if I feel like a pizza or cake I’ll eat it.
I also don’t do alcohol, but I do have a coffee or tea. I don’t bulk up and then lean out because there’s no purpose anymore. Been there done that.
Now I just eat consistently good all the time.
👍 What has inspired and motivated you?
I don’t read many books. I’m self-motivated and getting advices is not my thing. I’m normally giving it.
✏️ Advice for other people who want to improve themselves?
Most trainers don’t know what they’re doing. They just bounce balls and have no knowledge on how to train somebody and besides that they don’t even get a diet program.
I see a lot of mistakes in the gym. There’s no focus and people don’t do the exercises correctly.
Just think positive in and out of the gym and take each day as it comes.
🤝 Are you taking on clients right now?
I don’t train people. I only trained people in the ring for wrestling.
