We talked with Kerry Chuang in April, 2020.
👋 Hi! Tell us about yourself and your training
Hi, I’m Kerry, also known as @kurryious, I’m 24 years old and currently live in California. My day time job is a hairstylist and makeup artist at an upscale salon, but I also have various side jobs like modeling, streaming, etc. I have always been interested in everything beaut-related.
I am naturally very thin and don’t have much of an appetite so I need to exercise regularly to maintain a healthy appetite. I had an accident during my teenage years and sprained my knee, learning exercises in physical therapy so I could walk again. Exercise ended up becoming part of my daily routine and I wanted more!
I started to become very interested in overall health and began to research nutrition and exercises. I started out slow with calisthenics and basic stretching, then advanced to yoga, pilates, long distance running, and weights. I loved how it made me feel and how well I sleep after a workout!
⏱ Describe a typical day of training
I typically train after working at the salon either at home or at 24-hour fitness. I usually like working out at home because it’s more sanitary and spacious but recently started going to the gym with a coworker because she doesn’t like to go alone haha! She bought a buddy pass just for me.
I like to take a multivitamin every other day and a protein fruit and vegetable smoothie in the morning. At the salon, I hit 5,000-10,000 steps a day, by the end of the day the arches of my feet hurt so I rarely do cardio.
I like to alternate days between one hour of light weights, yoga, and pilates. I like to keep it at one hour because I noticed I work out harder if I give myself a smaller time limit.
After exercising or eating I log in everything in an app called MyFitnessPal. You can input what you ate, how much water you drank and your exercises there and it will tell you an estimate of your nutrition intake and calories burned.
👊 How do you keep going and push harder?
Some things that motivate me is my friend who I go to the gym with, pictures of my body goals and self-love.
I think self-love is extremely important when it comes to motivation because you need to love and respect yourself enough to get your butt out of your bed or the couch and go workout.
I have various family members who all have health and weight-related issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, bone spurs, arthritis, etc.
It’s sad to say but growing up around people with health problems that could be reduced or completely gone simply by adjusting their diet and exercise motivated and still motivates me to make healthier decisions.
I also noticed if I overthink about working out, it mentally taxes me and lowers my motivation. What I do to counter that is to just not think about it too much! Just go do it and it will be over before you know it.
🏆 How are you doing today and what does the future look like?
Today I am doing great and still consistently working out even though all the gyms are closed due to the quarantine.
My fitness goals for the next five years are to continue to make healthy decisions when it comes to my diet and exercise. I would also like to remain toned.
Goals of mine in other areas of my life include continuing my YouTube channel, becoming a successful hair stylist, and developing my magazine, Yogle.
I think if I had the ability to change anything in my fitness journey it would be to stop freaking out over the small things. It’s ok to treat yourself and have cheat days without feeling guilty! 🙂
🤕 How do you recover, rest and handle injuries?
The way I prevent injuries is to do my best to keep proper posture and seeing the chiropractor every week for an adjustment. I have scoliosis so it’s important to get adjusted. I noticed I recover very well when I am eating and sleeping enough!
I can sleep anywhere from eight to 12 hours, which I love because then my body repairs itself pretty fast. Once in a while my lower back starts pinching due to a combination of standing all day and the scoliosis so I use a tens machine where ever I have a problem.
🍎 How is your diet and what supplements do you use?
I don’t necessarily have a diet that I follow, I just do my best to make healthier choices. For example, I slowly cut out sodas and a majority of processed foods from my life. I will occasionally eat chips and other things that aren’t great for you but I eat pretty healthy for the most part.
I noticed it’s more about finding a balance than being really strict on yourself. If you’re too strict then you end up binge eating things and feeling even worse.
MyFitness Pal tracks the calories for me but I try to not pay attention to that. Yes, your caloric intake is important in certain aspects, but personally I just try to eat a lot of vegetables, some fruit, meat and complex carbs of some kind.
My focus is mainly being healthy and treating my body right. I feel like being half Asian and half Hispanic has helped me when it comes to my diet because I grew up eating a variety of vegetables that aren’t typical in an American diet.
Both of my ethnic backgrounds are from regions near the ocean so I also grew up eating a ton of seafood, which is really healthy for you. When your body craves something though that usually means you’re nutritionally lacking/deficient in something so I will research what the craving means I am missing and go eat that.
If the craving isn’t satisfied then I just get whatever I’m craving. I’m not perfect though and sometimes I do eat more junk food than I would like or I just get so busy between my three jobs and online business that I don’t have time to meal prep for that week and I make some bad decisions. I do get a little fluffy so all I do is reduce my carbs and that usually does the trick.
For my drinks, I only have soft drinks when it’s my absolute last choice or if i need a chaser for alcohol. While we’re on the topic, I love alcohol but I’m a simple person and just like to drink liquor straight.
Usually liquor is about the same amount of calories it’s just all the other stuff put into mixed drinks that is bad for you. I like to drink vodka, rum, gin, and tequila! 🙂
As for coffee, I grew up drinking coffee since kindergarten, haha! I know it’s bad for you so I stopped drinking it too. I only drink tea now (I will occasionally drink coffee about once a month) and that usually has enough caffeine when i need it.
I try to drink non-caffeinated teas on my days off so that my caffeine tolerance goes down and so my body isn’t dehydrated.
👍 What has inspired and motivated you?
I’m kinda nerdy and boring and love books, especially those related to nutrition and herbology! Some books that have inspired me are the collection Kevin Trudeu did exposing the FDA and food industry and my encyclopedias on herbs. So these have inspired me by giving me information to make healthier decisions for my overall health.
Like I used to always stay sick for a ridiculous amount of time, maybe three to four weeks. After I learned garlic supports your immune system, heart, blood, arteries and is antimicrobial; I started to make garlic tea with honey, which also has antibacterial properties.
I know it sounds super weird and maybe even disgusting but I just drink that all day in addition to water and after I started doing that I only stay sick for about three to five days! It’s pretty cool!
The fact that what you ingest can make such a huge impact on how long you stay sick amazes me and also is one of the reasons why I do my best to make healthy choices. The food you eat and what you drink really does affect your body so much.
✏️ Advice for other people who want to improve themselves?
Some advice for others would be just to take things slow, be realistic in your diet regimen and exercise schedule, and don’t be too hard on yourself.
Many times we over book ourselves or our goals are unrealistic and we set ourselves up for failure. 🙁 Set small goals, enjoy your baby victories even if it feels ridiculous!
Putting yourself in a positive mindset is going to let you accomplish those goals that are currently unrealistic but if you keep staying positive and consistent eventually they will be your reality.
🤝 Are you taking on clients right now?
I am currently not taking on any clients. Between being receptionist, hairstylist, model and small business owner, I am usually very busy.
I have been offered a job from a owner of a gym but I declined the job. I don’t think I would be good to hire because although I love nutrition and that was my major in school, I am not a certified trainer. I do often get asked about my diet and exercise so I will make a YouTube video on that.
