We talked with Gianna Sciortino in April, 2020.
👋 Hi! Tell us about yourself and your training
Hello! My name is Gianna Sciortino. I am 22 years old and from Brooklyn, New York. I am a social media influencer and Real Estate Agent. I graduated from Pace University with a degree in Entertainment Management. My family and friends mean the world to. My boyfriend’s name is Michael and I love him dearly.
The biggest accomplishment in my life was losing 120lbs and fighting PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).
I was overweight ever since the day I was born. Throughout my life, I have always eaten healthy and exercised as much as possible. My mom took me for blood testing and found out that my hormone levels were imbalanced.
The Dr. said “I don’t want to put your child on medicine, try to make her lose weight.” I always knew that there had to be something wrong because no matter what I did I was never able to lose weight.
As I was gaining more and more weight my hormones started changing. I lost my menstrual cycle as well as other things that affected me physically and emotionally.
When I was 18, my endocrinologist diagnosed me with PCOS because of the amount of weight I gained. Before my body transformation, I was a sad girl living in a happy girl’s body.
I was seriously so upset inside because of my lack of confidence and all of the bullying I went through growing up. I never felt good enough for anyone and anything. I was so insecure with myself that I barely wanted to leave my house at certain points.
I never expressed my feelings to anyone because I was scared of being judged. I cared too much about what other people thought about me. I believe it effected my performance as well.
I always felt like I was being judged first for my weight and not my performance. Nice job for a Big Girl. I always felt like the outcast and fat friend in my group. Boys never really spoke to me.
On June 12, 2017, I received the gastric sleeve surgery. This surgery basically cut part of my stomach out to make me less hungry. With this I still eat very healthy and workout. I don’t want it to sound so easy because it wasn’t.
Six months prior to the surgery there were series of testing. I had to pass psychological tests. I had to work with a nutritionist and had to go on liquid diet prior to the surgery. I also have to be careful not to eat too fast because I will get sick. But it was the best decision I have ever made.
⏱ Describe a typical day of training
When I first started losing weight I was doing a lot of cardio. Then as I reached my weight loss goal, I incorporated HIT and now I do mostly weight training and HIT. I make sure I get all my protein in throughout the day which is the most important thing for me. I use MyFitnessPal to track all of my meals.
My favorite exercise is weighted bridges with a resistant band. It helps me bulk my gluteus muscles. I usually workout with my boyfriend because he motivates me a lot.
I usually carry water and my resistant bands.
👊 How do you keep going and push harder?
Looking at how far I’ve come has made me push myself harder each day. “If I did that, then I could do this”, is something I tell myself daily. I want to be the best version of myself. I try my best to inspire people to do the same.
My biggest challenge is more mental than physical. I am very hard on myself and make extremely difficult goals. Sometimes I need to take a step back, and look at how far I’ve come.
🏆 How are you doing today and what does the future look like?
My future is to keep inspiring people… I want to build a community, which is based on motivation. My transformation seems impossible for people but I want them to know that they could do it too. It’s all about being consistent and not giving up.
I do not think that I would change anything. It wasn’t perfect but I did learn so much.
🤕 How do you recover, rest and handle injuries?
When I train I am very careful that I do not get injured. Getting injured would be a nightmare for myself because fitness is my life. I take Epsom salt baths throughout the week to ease my muscles and try to stay as hydrated as possible. I usually sleep eight hours at night.
🍎 How is your diet and what supplements do you use?
I always ate extremely healthy but I ate too much. I was never into carbs. I ate mostly protein and vegetables. I eat a lot of fish, chicken turkey and red meat occasionally. I get the leanest meat as possible. Usually between 98/99% fat free. I eats lots of vegetables.
I try to stay away from dairy as much as I can but cheese is my weakness lol I only drink water. I try not to eat past 7:30 p.m. I came out with a meal plan to help people.
I usually can find a healthy choice wherever I go, BUT I truly believe in moderation. SO I do cheat here and there.
👍 What has inspired and motivated you?
I always wanted to lose weight and I never stopped fighting for it.
In the fall of 2016, I starred as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray for a theater company in New York. This character portrayed a plus-sized teenager who always had a dream of dancing on the most famous television show. She was a better dancer than all the others but she was overlooked because of her weight.
Tracy broke barriers and made it on the show. She inspired people from all aspects and united them. I always dreamed of playing this role because I felt a connection with this character.
I started excepting the fact that I was overweight and tried to make the best of it. When the show came to an end, I was back at square one. I was so depressed and hated myself. There were no parts for me to play because I was overweight.
I was still getting bullied and people just thought I was a joke. I knew I had to do something because I just wasn’t happy. Life is too short to not love what you do and not to be happy.
I actually tried to get on Revenge Body. Khloe Kardashian gave me strength and influenced me in some way. I felt a certain connection to her. After a while of not hearing back from the show, I had to make a decision to take charge of my life.
As you can see I always hashtag her in my posts because she did give me strength to move forward. This is when I decided to get the gastric sleeve surgery.
✏️ Advice for other people who want to improve themselves?
You can do ANYTHING that you put your mind to!!!!!! Having confidence and self love is a game changer in life. I have a love more opportunities because I now believe in myself.
I have a passion for health and fitness and inspiring people. I am finally secure with myself. I am finally talking to new people and not afraid of being judged.
I learned to love myself and put myself first no matter what. My weight loss journey was for myself and nobody else. This journey has made me so strong and aware of my worth.
I will always stand up for what I think is right and inspire people along the way. I have more energy and feel healthy.
🤝 Are you taking on clients right now?
I love helping people! If you want to get in touch for business or even just to talk, email me @[email protected] or message me on IG @gi_sciortino.
I train because I love it and I care. I don’t just tell you what to do… I am apart of your journey with you. Many of my clients tell me that I give them hope and motivate them. It is about that relationship that you build with people.
I love seeing people succeed and helping them change their lives. My clients usually see results within two weeks.
So many people ask me if they go to the gym and workout will they lose weight. I always tell them that their diet is the most important thing.
Training will help in terms of sculpting your body and getting stronger overall BUT you can not just eat whatever you want and go to the gym and expect to lose weight.
